About TKD

Taekwon-Do is a modern version of a martial art which originated in Korea. It is characterized by fast, high, jumping, spinning kicks and swift footwork. It is an all-round programme that includes physical exercise, artistic expression and self-defence training.
At Taran Tek TKD we practice the ITF style of Taekwon-Do as opposed to the Olympic Taekwondo (different spelling) ITF Taekwon-Do has more emphasis on the martial art, including the Tenets (laws) and also encourages the use of hand techniques equally with kicks when sparring.
Taekwon-Do is taught in dojangs (Taekwon-Do halls) by certified and experienced Instructors. The term "Taekwon-Do" is a composite Korean word meaning "kick with the foot" (Tae), "punch with the hand" (Kwon) and "method, art or way" (Do).The simplest English translation is "The art of kicking and punching".
The objectives of Taekwon-Do are:
To learn self-defence techniques.
To achieve physical fitness through dedicated participation.
To improve mental discipline and emotional maturity.
To develop a sense of responsibility for both oneself and others.
To develop an appreciation of Taekwon-Do as both a sport and an art form.

The Founder

Major General Choi Hong Hi 9th degree
Taekwon-Do was inaugurated on April 11th 1955 after extensive research and development by the founder Major General Choi Hong Hi 9th Degree.

History

The name "Taran Tek" is from the Cornish language and literally means "Beautiful Thunder" This for us sums up the sport of Taekwon-Do, the beauty of patterns coupled with the power of striking and sparring. We're based in Cornwall so wanted to represent the local language in the name of our club. The logo was designed by Mr Hayers and derives from a picture of Jhoon Rhee performing a side-kick. We decided to arrange the lettering in a circle around the central image to denote the same ideology of the "round table". This represents the equality, unity, and comradeship of the club.
Taran Tek Taekwon-Do was formed on Sunday 15th July 2007 by students from the club formerly known as "Billy Thomson's Taekwon-Do" in Truro. Following Mr Thomson's "retirement" the club structure was re-built and expanded into two new clubs under the Taran Tek TKD Banner. The Truro club was run by Mr Hayers and the St Newlyn East club was run by Mr Spinks with St Erme opening a few years later. Since then Miss Bone and Mr Elford have taken over at St Newlyn East and Mr Hayers additionally took on the club at St Erme in early 2019.
We have several fully qualified Instructors from 1st to 5th Dan who all contribute to the development of the club. Each Instructor has undergone a nationally recognised training programme coupled with an enhanced DBS check.
All of our instructors are committed to teaching traditional Taekwon-Do combined with self defence, groundwork and all round fitness.

Colour Belts

The Tenets of Taekwon-Do
The Tenets are the backbone of Taekwon-Do. They are the laws that every Taekwon-Do student should live by and not just exercised in the Dojang. Be peaceful and respectful in all that you do in life.
Make every effort to learn all about the Tenets.

The Oath of Taekwon-Do

As a student of Taekwon-Do
I shall observe the Tenets of Taekwon-Do
I shall respect my Instructor and Seniors
I shall never misuse Taekwon-Do
I shall be a champion of freedom and justice
I shall build a more peaceful world.

Step Sparring

Three Step Sparring

Sambo Matsoki
This is the initial basic set of exercises for beginners usually covering 9th to 7th Kup. This familiarises the student with the correct attack and defence techniques utilising mainly hand parts against middle and high attacks and the foot parts against low attacks while stepping forwards and backwards.

Freestyle Self-Defence

As well as the structured protocols that students exercise in a grading, we also practice freestyle (real life) self-defence routines. These can take the form of scenarios that a student might encounter in everyday life. There is also a wealth of information out there on reputable internet sites. Have a look at the video from Grand Master Nardizzi below
